Desiree's Response about Ridgeback Training Part 3

Desiree: With people, Sophie isn't aggressive but is spooky. Although I do notice more protectiveness as she gets older, and she's positively enthusiastic about patrolling the back yard. She's never had a negative experience and is still very suspicious of strangers, especially men. She was fine -- friendly and outgoing and affectionate, until she hit 6 months. Then there was a time when she didn't even trust my husband, who she's known her whole life and who is a complete pushover when it comes to dogs. She is getting MUCH better as she gets older, and is now quite manageable, just not sociable. Like I said before, too, she's friendly with her victims.

I do notice that she shares many personality characteristics with my pit bull (who was a fantastic SAR dog but obnoxious to train as well). The chief differences are that Sophie is smarter, moodier, more dominant, and less extroverted. Spirit (the pit) was easier to train but once she had fixated on a goal, much harder to redirect. Spirit was a rescue similar to how you described Ebbey, starving (literally) and wandering the streets. She'd been tied up and chewed through the rope.

Sophie has a fabulous nose and is a great tracker so I think she'll make a good SAR dog. She knows the difference between when we're doing SAR and when we're just out for a hike. Like you said, habit seems to play a big role in her success. My main concern is, as you guessed, getting her past the obedience requirements. Also I want to work her off-lead because she's so fast. I guess it will just take time and patience! We'll keep working on the heel and the recall!

Playing the search dog, Ebbey has a leading role in the eerie action thriller Search Dog's Raven. Her character is paramount, because the key to unlocking the film's unique twist turns out to be the 'Search Dog's...Raven.
