Ebbey the Canine Actor Ebbey's Last Healing Log Allex Michael:
Sunday 9am: Ebbey more sober than the last two days, but still impaired and drowsy. Running around the back yard for short bursts. Will take her for a medium length walk tonight with the Rottweiler.
4pm: Ebbey cry whining in her sleep. Nightmare, woke herself up.
Monday pm: Ebbey is starting to play with her soft toys again.
Ebbey is becoming very bored with eating her blenderized mush food. Because she is not a very efficient lapper, she ends up covering me and herself with mushy dinner. It's slightly easier when she licks spoonfuls of mush from a plate, but the projectiles just fly in a low straight line.
Ebbey's 'self absorbing' stitches must be dissolving as they are now hanging down from her gum.
Because Ebbey now appears to be doing very well, I hope this will be my last entry for this saga. The antibiotics run until Wednesday and the Metacam pain reliever until Tuesday. Will keep looking at extraction areas for infection. I also regularly smell her mouth and the smell has improved significantly since the bad tooth removal. Breath has even improved since before the cracked tooth.
Seeing a ridge, gently ran a clean finger along the gum where the tooth had been removed. Called the vet concerned that a piece of tooth had been left inside. Turns out the bone, from which the tooth was extracted, has a sharp ridge. With only a thin piece of gum covering it, I mistook it for a sharp piece of tooth.
UPDATE: One odd side effect of Ebbey's surgery is her problem ear (caused by the occasional allergy flare up) is no longer producing dark brown wax. Ebbey's allergies are under control, but she can still only eat about twenty foods without a major allergic reaction. Even munching on some grass can cause a flare up. I've been cleaning the ear, despite no brown wax, but obviously not often enough as Ebbey has now developed a mild yeast infection (bad yeasty smell and the slightest bit of white scum) three and a half weeks after her surgery. Despite all the allergic reactions, this is her first ear infection. I'm angry with myself, after two years of vigilance in keeping the ear clean.
Some sources, and personal experience, suggest that yeast infections can be an after effect of the antibiotic treatment for her tooth surgery. So perhaps the combination of me not cleaning often enough (no brown wax) and her altered body chemistry from the anesthesia and then antibiotics led to the yeast moving in. Will try Panalog for now and have Zymox on order as a backup, to clear up the yeast problem in her ear. Though already improving, will be back to the vets if the yeast is still there in 3 days. Will also hold off on introducing any new foods for a few weeks. Fortunately, Ebbey did not react to neomycin in the Panalog. It kept the yeast at bay. After a week, the Zymox arrived and I switched. It completely cleared the infection within a few days. It has some questionable ingredients, for a health nut like myself, but it did the job. For some reason Zymox is not available in Canada, where we are doing post production for the film Search Dog's Raven, so I had to have it mailed from the US.
