Ebbey's Tooth Extraction Surgery

These before and after photos are at different angles, but the gum markings verify that this is the same tooth. Here you see Ebbey's back molar before cracking. There is a strange dark mark on the lower half of the tooth. The mark also happens to be where the tooth cracked totally in half. >

Ebbey's Extraction and Tooth Damage

Allex Michael: After the surgery, Andrea (vet tech) explained that the large tooth root was alive and the tooth was split entirely in half.

Because there was a dark mark on the tooth AND because Ebbey has always chewed as if she had a bad tooth on this side AND because her breath was always less than perfect despite good dental hygiene, I'm certain there was some kind of micro split, fracture or damage on this tooth all along that the initial vet and I missed.

I scale her teeth regularly, but have only recently begun scaling on the inside of the teeth (Ebbey's comfort levels). This means a small inside crack could have gone unnoticed. So the initial damage (black scuff mark) may have been the score line to the tooth's cracking in half. Guess the true test will be whether or not her overall chewing improves weeks after the surgery heals.

Dr. Wennekamp said to allow 2 to 3 weeks for healing, though some dogs recover much faster.

Andrea (vet tech) gave Ebbey an antibiotic shot after surgery, so she would start oral antibiotics the following morning.
