Anesthesia
Allex Michael: Propofol is injected as an induction agent. It puts the dog to sleep for a few minutes so a tube can be inserted (endotracheal intubation) within the windpipe to deliver oxygen with the inhalant anesthesia. A small controllable percentage of Isoflurane gas is added to the oxygen to maintain the pet's lack of consciousness and insensitivity to pain.
A mask can also be used, but the tube provides direct control of respiration and prevents the dog from breathing out saliva. Inhalant anesthesia is easier to control than an injectable and doesn't cause anesthesia hangover. It is also much gentler to the liver and kidneys and the pet wakes up very rapidly after surgery.
Some vets induce with a mask of Isoflurane gas instead of first injecting Propofol. However, a much higher dose of Isoflurane gas is needed to initially knock the animal out and it takes longer to get control of the airway. With Ebbey's allergies, the Propofol injection and then tube down the windpipe allows the quickest control of the airway in case she has an adverse reaction.
