Allex Michael: For an Indie filmmaker on a budget, price is a concern. But scrimping on canine healthcare is a bad idea. However, many veterinarians charge different amounts for a similar level of medical care.

Ebbey and I have been living near Calgary, Alberta, Canada during production and post production of my first film Search Dog's Raven. Now at one million people, the city's oil and gas based economy is booming. This has led to some of the highest prices for real estate, food, goods, services and even gasoline in Canada.

When I first adopted Ebbey, and thought she would have to be spayed, I phoned around and got Calgary vet quotes ranging from 350 to 1350 dollars.
